Hearthware's
New iRoast Home Coffee Bean Roaster
This is our observation of the iRoast
The
long awaited I-Roast has finally arrived in our coffee store.
We’ve tested it for the past few months and are happy to give it our
full Thumbs UP!
After many roasts, here’s
our observations on the new I-Roast home coffee bean roaster.
We hope you’ll find it helpful in making a selection for the home
coffee roaster
best suited for you.
First
Impressions
It
is similar to the old Home Innovation model made by Hearthware years ago with a
few noticeable modifications. Size
of the unit is almost identical. The
I-Roast is black and consists of three main parts – the base, roasting chamber
and top chaff collector. Like the
Hearthware original and Home Innovations, the I-roast makes the visual aspect to
roasting very easy to see. Little
change has occurred in the glass-roasting chamber other than the design of the
center cylinder. Instead of the
beans blowing up like the water coming out of a water hose pointed straight up,
the new I-roast allows beans to be held in a center ring momentarily during the
‘low blow’ stage, then when the fan speed increases, it blows them out,
drawing in more beans from the parameter, thus rotating the beans a small batch
at a time through out the roasting process.
The
biggest change is evident in the new programming technology of the roasting
base. More computerized options
have been implemented into the roaster to allow more options on roasting.
For those serious die-hard roasters who like to modify their roasting
curves – the new I-roast allows a much more flexible variation to the roasting
process. One can program their
roast into 3 stages with the temperature and roasting time pre-determined by the
users liking. There are also two preset roasting cycles where you can simply
push “Preset 1” or “Preset 2” and let the roaster go through the 8 or 12
minute cycle without user intervention. However,
even in the preset stages the user can add additional time during the last cycle
if the beans haven’t roasted enough - up to a total roasting time of 15 minutes...but you can only add additional time once. All these
variables are a welcome addition to modifying the roasting process.
Safety upgrades have been incorporated into the new design as well.
Locking lids and chambers make it nice.
Operation cannot occur until all units are securely fastened.

User
can set up roasting curves, or use preset roasting curves: At each
roasting stage, temperature is accurately controlled. This is a
function that only the most sophisticated machines that may cost
thousands of dollars have. This is the very first time it has been
used in a home coffee roaster. |
 |
Accurate
roasting time and temperature adjustment: Roasting time can be
changed by 1 second and roasting temperature can be adjusted by 5°F
or 2°C increments. |
 |
Check
the roasting temperature during the roasting cycle: Built-in
function for users to check the roasting temperature: no need for
thermometers any more. It gives the user a clear idea of the inside
temperature. |
 |
Increase/decrease
roasting time during roasting: It gives the user the flexibility of
controlling the final roasting results. |
