Storage for Coffee Beans

Green Coffee Beans
Green Coffee beans resemble raw dried beans and have a grassy like smell associated with them.  If stored properly, green coffee beans can stay good for years.  Coffee Storehouse recommends that green coffee beans be stored in a well ventilate bag or container.  Paper sacks or burlap bags work well for this.  Temperatures should stay constant.  A good range would be between 50-85.  Keep green coffee beans out of direct light or exposed to too high of humidity.  Most kitchen pantries work well for this type of storage.

Roasted Coffee Beans
After getting that perfect fresh roast, it is essential to store home roasted coffee properly. To maximize freshness and flavor, here are some helpful tips for storing roasted coffee.

Roast only what you can use within a week.  Store as whole bean. Grind only enough beans to use just before you prepare your coffee.

Oxygen can quickly deteriorate the quality of coffee.  Storing roasted beans in a ceramic or glass container with a good airtight seal can minimize this.  An important note -because freshly roasted beans can emit gases within the first 24 hours after roasting do not seal lid completely.  Allow the gases to escape within that time and then seal in an airtight container.   We don’t recommend plastic containers because they can pick up flavors too easily and transfer to beans.  Paper sacks allow too much air circulation and cause staleness to set in much faster.

Keep roasted coffee away from light.

It is not advisable to store roasted coffee in the refrigerator since coffee acts like a big sponge waiting to absorb anything around it.
